Why America is defenseless against mass-shootings?

With the rise in gun violence and shootings in the States, the question arises: why is nothing being done about the gun laws?

Mass shootings are defined as situations where four or more people are shot and killed. The United States, by May, has already had 213 mass shootings this year. The death toll for 2022 has crossed 17,000; on average, the States expect about 600 mass shootings every year.

Yesterday, on 24th May, 19 children were gunned down - alongside two teachers in an elementary school in Texas. This case, just like many others, sparks a desperate need for change. Unfortunately, no resolution - to curb gun violence- has been passed even after decades of mass shootings.

This is due to multiple fundamental issues present in the United States' constituency. The problems can be classified under the following umbrellas:

  1. The Second Amendment

  2. Systematic suppression

1. The Second Amendment

The Amendment states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

In the given context, the Amendment essentially allows all Americans to have arms under the pretext of "self-defence". Logically, this makes no sense. However, the Amendments, the fundamental pillars upon which American constituencies are developed, allow every individual to purchase arms. So, yeah, it is a bit weird - if you think about it.

2. Systematic suppression

Rewriting an amendment is definitely a huge problem. That is because many laws are made in reference to those amendments; hence, rewriting them would require multiple alterations across the entire constitution. So, many Democrats proposed bills which gave justified solutions to the gun violence problems instead of attempting to rewrite the Amendments.

The bills focused on performing background checks on people who attempt to purchase arms. Even though it sounds fair enough, these bills were rejected at multiple instances.

This is due to a degree of systematic suppression present in Congress. Congress is the legislative branch of the federal government and is in charge of making the country's laws. Congress is divided into two sections, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Both branches work independently, and a bill/law must be passed by a majority in both branches to be instituted in the constitution.

However, the two branches have a large majority of conservative white republicans who do not seek solutions. The democrats' resolutions have been shunned and condemned throughout history to ensure the sustenance of ill-shaped gun laws.

Henceforth, the United States is not facing gun violence because it is not able to control it. It is facing gun violence because it does not want to control it. Now to answer the title: "Why America is defenceless against mass shootings?" The answer is simple; the American legislature wants to remain defenceless against the persistent threat of shootings for undisclosed reasons.

It is a twisted reality. However, it is the reality indeed.

Hopefully, a true resolution will be sought soon, and gun threats will be curbed.

Very well written piece, but can we really call the second amendment completely illogical without factoring in how it was once necessary in an atmosphere where the American public were oppressed by their previous (British) government due to force of arms and were thus apprehensive of a repeat of the same and wished to arm themselves to protect themselves against that possiblity.
