Simply told.

Without too many dates and details involved, I will do my best to explain this conflict as simply as I can.
Firstly, this conflict is not ancient. It is not a religious issue. It is a recent century-old conflict that came up due to a land dispute. In a straightforward manner, this is how it went: there two people were Mr X and Mr Y; both of them liked one plot in Delhi, India.
Mr X was living in the plot when it was owned by ABC company. But after some market crash, ABC company went out of business, and suddenly Mr Y (who is running from thugs) comes in and starts to live on the same plot. Now they both fight, argue, and hurt each other, trying to gain ownership of the plot. As the conflict was happening, the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) intervened and said: I will divide this one property for the two of you, and you must accept it.
The unique thing about this plot was that there was a very important magical immovable object inside. By just being around it, all your life's problems were solved. Now MCD decided that it cannot choose to whom this magical object belongs, so they made the location of that object a "special common zone". Mr Y was fine with this, but Mr X was not. Mr X started fighting again, but in doing so - he did not realise that Mr Y was more powerful. Mr Y, now in the flow of things, partly occupied the "special common zone" and also seized land from neighbouring plots.
So all the neighbours came up with a plan and started to attack Mr Y, but Mr Y did not lose. He kept on going stronger. Time went by, Mr X lived in his shrunken plot and slowly lost control over the land. Mr Y was winning, and then the other neighbours started making peace with him. But, Mr X and Mr Y are now still fighting and are now not trying to take over each other's land but completely kill each other off.
With that simple explanation, now I will give in some details and unravel Mr X and Y's story.
Mr X refers to Palestine, Mr Y refers to Israel, ABC Company is the Ottoman Empire, the neighbours are the other Arab states in the region, and the MCD is the United Nations.
The land which is now under question is located here (I am saying "here" because this conflicted land has too many names):

This land was originally an Arab dominated region. The land was peacefully under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. There also were some Jews and Christians here who lived in harmony. The people living here started to believe in their own free state called Palestine. Simultaneously in Europe, a new movement began called "Zionism" - it was the idea that Judaism is not just a religion but also something that deserves a country of its own.
So after being persecuted for centuries, the Jews believed that the only way to be safe is to have their own country. They saw Jerusalem (where the Palestinians lived), the resting place of the Jewish gods, as their home. Many Jews started to flood towards Jerusalem.
As the Ottoman Empire collapsed after World War I, the entire location fell under British control.
At first, there was a lot of Jewish immigration in the new British governed territory. This started raising tension between the Jews and the Arabs - resulting in violent conflicts. Both sides began attacking one and other. To curb this, the British government began limiting Jewish immigration. The local Jews then created groups and militias to counter the Arabs and British simultaneously.
Now the Holocaust happened - this was the perfect time for the Zionist to get their free state. So the UN (MCD) decided to carve up the same land for both the Arab Palestinians and the Jewish Israelis - while granting them independence from the British. Jerusalem's land is important for Christians, Muslims, and the Jews became a special international zone (special common zone).
But, as Mr X disagreed with the MCD. Palestinians disagreed with the UN. They now fought with Israel, who ended up not only capturing Palestinian land but also Syrian and Egyptian land. As their land was captured by Israel, many Palestinians fled and today, that particular migrant population is larger than 7 million.
As Israeli power rose, they started to house many of their locals within the Palestinian borders. By making small military protected Israeli cities inside Palestine - the state of Israel ensured that the Palestinian state will never be created. Israel also started to become in charge of the government and treated the Palestinian territory as their land. By prosecuting and "bullying" the Palestinians, Israelis established their dominance over the territory.
Now after many conflicts, battles, treaties, and attacks later. Both states, Palestine and Israel, want to end/kill the other. Hamas and PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organisation) fight from the Palestinian side to kill off Israel. In this conflict, and amidst the retaliations, the people living in the land end up between the crossfire and start losing lives.
Currently, we are seeing just another small episode in the century-long militia based violence. The death toll in the recent news is reported to be 32. Still, overall, these small episodes have taken more than 30,000 civilian lives.
There is no solution in sight, but we can hope that one day there will be.
