In a stand against racism and discrimination Tom Cruise and the NBC disregard the awards.

Tom Cruise has returned three of his Golden Globe awards, given to him for his performances in Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and Born on the Fourth of July. Furthermore, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) has withdrawn as a broadcaster for the 2022 Golden Globe awards.

The Golden Globe awards is an A-list award ceremony, close in the running with the Oscars. They are valuable and reputed across the media industry. However, due to certain cases which have caught the public eye - the reputation and value of the Golden Globes is at stake.

Certain reports have provided evidence of systematic harassment and racism spread across the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). What is the HFPA, you may ask? The HFPA is the entity that hands out the Golden Globes and is in charge of the ceremonies. They basically can be considered to be the CEO of the Golden Globes.

The reports have showcased how top HFPA workers have been calling in favours for actors (possibly fixing the awards) and have ignored pleas of racism and sexual harassment in the workplace. A report brought out that - currently, in 2021 - there is not a single "black" or African American reporter working with the HFPA. Moreover, allegations are imposed on the Golden Globes committee (the HFPA) regarding how they act in a sexist and homophobic manner when appointing hosts and nominating awardees.

Due to this, even Scarlet Johansson, Netflix, Warner Brothers, and Amazon Studios have also stated that they will stop working with the HFPA.

The companies have informed the HFPA that they will only continue to work with them if they make necessary changes. The HFPA has agreed to the demands and has already set plans for training its staff to stop and curb workplace discrimination.

Overall, this is a stand against discrimination. Regardless, of the motives behind the actions taken by the entities against the HFPA and the awards - this is a step which needs to be taken. The HFPA has been given a timeline to set themselves straight, and time will tell whether or not true change is brought within the discriminatory association.
